Reflections on our work toward high-quality, accessible health care for all

At BlueCross, 2023 was defined by two themes: health equity and affordability.

These ideas guided every decision we made on behalf of our members during this past year. Highlights include:

We developed our second Health Equity Report, which includes expanded data around social risk factors, mental health, maternal health, and childhood immunizations — and highlights our efforts to help improve health outcomes.

BlueCross Healthy Places have always brought people together — usually through opportunities for healthy activity, such as playgrounds, sports fields and fitness areas. But for the initiative’s fifth anniversary, we announced a partnership with the National Civil Rights Museum to create the BlueCross Healthy Place at Founders Park in Memphis, connecting visitors with a new kind of shared experience.

Our BlueSky Tennessee Institute student body doubled in size with the arrival of our second cohort. We also worked with our partners at East Tennessee State University to expand the teaching faculty on-site at our Cameron Hill campus.

Innovations in recruitment and career development at BlueCross continued as we implemented new talent programs, expanded existing mentorship opportunities and launched a new careers website for new hires. We’re excited about these efforts and ideas that will enhance how we support our people as they serve our members.

We put a renewed focus on behavioral health care by increasing compensation rates for mental health providers to encourage more participation in our networks. We also embarked on a yearlong pilot with Centerstone, a nonprofit health system specializing in mental health and substance use disorder services. This pilot, currently available to members covered by an employer-sponsored plan or an individual plan, is designed to support high-quality, cost-effective outpatient mental health resources and treatment.

Recognizing convenience as a driver of health care decisions, we expanded our virtual care services by partnering with Teladoc and integrating this service with our BCBSTN mobile app. We also revamped our eight Blue of Tennessee centers, making it easier for members to get affordable, high-quality care and help from an insurance advisor all in one location.

These are just a few examples of how we worked toward our members’ peace of mind through better health in 2023.

Thank you for reading our annual report and for continuing to let us be your partner on your health care journey.
