community trust

Serving our neighbors as a good corporate citizen

As a local, not-for-profit insurer, we pride ourselves on using our members’ premium dollars carefully and wisely. We not only pay for health care services, but we also strive to balance the rising cost of that care, providing our members with access to quality, affordable options.

On top of that, we’re based right here in Tennessee – which means the jobs, household income and revenue we generate support the communities where the majority of our members and employees live. Our employees put our values to work by volunteering with nonprofits across the state, and we invest our Foundation’s resources to create public spaces that bring people together.

Better health, stronger communities

One way we support the wellbeing of our neighbors is by providing opportunities for connection and healthy activity. The BlueCross Healthy Place program creates and revitalizes public spaces across the state, strengthening the bonds that form the backbone of our communities. And that’s why it’s the primary funding focus of the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation. In 2025, we celebrated the grand opening of our Founders Park project at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. Construction also began on the BlueCross Healthy Place at Fishery Park in Erwin, which will bring a revitalized space to a community affected by Hurricane Helene.

Investment to reimagine Fishery Park in Erwin, a Northeast Tennessee town affected by Hurricane Helene. The finished space will include a new basketball court, amphitheater stage, field, sidewalk trail connectors and more.

A new, fun place to explore

“Despite the setbacks and challenges brought on by Hurricane Helene, the community has remained committed to revitalizing this cherished space. With the BlueCross Healthy Place funding, we have the opportunity to fully realize the vision that began years ago, creating a space that not only recovers from adversity but thrives as a hub for health, wellness and community connection.”

Supporting health at any age

For more than 40 years, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has sponsored the Tennessee Senior Olympics, which encourage senior citizens from around the state to stay active and live a healthy lifestyle. We provide financial support and volunteers for the annual state finals, and we established the Hall of Fame program in 2017.

A foundation for giving back

We spoke with Chelsea Johnson, Director of Community Relations and Foundations, about the BlueCross Foundation’s beginnings and how it continues to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.

TeamBlue volunteers

Our employees are committed to giving back. Each year, they donate thousands of hours of their time to support the causes and organizations that matter to them — and help their neighbors. In-person and virtual volunteer opportunities make it possible for employees to participate in the ways that work best for them.

In 2025, our TeamBlue volunteer activities included:

  • Letter-writing campaigns for senior citizens
  • Food bank sorting, stocking and distribution
  • Bunk bed builds for children in need
  • Charitable thrift store support

Mission moment

Kim Stanton, the 2025 TeamBlue Volunteer of the Year, gives back by spending time with local organizations that support children in her community. “I lost my daughter when she was 18,” she says. “So, I have a passion for making a difference in children’s lives and encouraging them.”

BlueCross Power of We Scholars

Since 2013, the BlueCross Power of We Scholarship has helped more than 50 promising students of all backgrounds continue their studies in the fields of nursing, medical technology, pharmacy and more. Each year, the BlueCross Foundation awards $10,000 each to 6 recipients based on their community service, leadership and academics – as well as their commitment to improving health care for Tennesseans.

Working smarter in our space while looking ahead

As the way we work continues to evolve, BlueCross is thoughtful about how much physical space we need – and how we use it. We’ve consolidated our use of the Cameron Hill campus as we engage with organizations interested in making the space their own. We’re improving efficiency, being good stewards of our members’ dollars, and giving employees the flexibility to live and work almost anywhere while staying connected to BlueCross.
