BlueCross Names Nelson Medical Director for Care Management

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has selected Dr. Jeffery E. Nelson as medical director of care management for its commercial business.

In this role, Nelson will oversee medical management and administrative operations for care management services that support the health of BlueCross members.

Nelson joins BlueCross after serving as medical director for Humana in the mid-south region. His clinical experience includes serving as head of critical care medicine at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, and as chief of critical care medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. While at UT, he established and managed a medical critical care teaching program. He has also worked in private practice in critical care medicine.

“Dr. Nelson is a proven leader in clinical operations, patient care initiatives and quality improvement,” said Dr. Daniel Barnett, medical director for medical risk management and interim associate chief medical officer for BlueCross. “His background in critical care medicine and his experience in managed care will guide BlueCross in providing the best care for our members.”

Nelson earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and his Doctor of Medicine from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and business from High Point University. He is board certified in critical care medicine and nutritional support.
