Company has record year in giving back to Tennessee communities
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A record $10.2 million was contributed by BlueCross® BlueShield® of Tennessee in 2012 to organizations working to improve the health, quality of life and education of Tennesseans. On top of that, BlueCross employees contributed more than 29,000 hours of volunteer work to good causes across the state.
“Giving back to our communities and investing in efforts to benefit all Tennesseans has always been a big part of who we are as a company,” said Calvin Anderson, senior vice president of corporate affairs and executive director of BlueCross’ Tennessee Health Foundation and Community Trust. “Since 2003, the Foundation has awarded more than $40 million in grants to worthwhile initiatives.”
The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Community Trust and corporate gifts are three major funding outlets BlueCross uses to make its charitable contributions.
In 2012, the Foundation contributed $6.2 million in grants to support causes such as expanding its Shape the State program to combat childhood obesity, increasing access to care through contributions to non-profit community clinics and enhancing training for nurses at Tusculum College.
Through the Trust, BlueCross donated more than $500,000 to more than 100 charitable organizations statewide. Money went to organizations that address disease management, access to care, prevention and early detection.
Additionally, BlueCross employees spent more than 29,000 hours volunteering in communities throughout the state. From serving on non-profit boards and coordinating community projects to participating in company-sponsored events, the employees worked to advance the health and well-being of Tennessee’s communities and its residents.
