Bike Chattanooga has placed 300 bicycles at 30 key areas throughout the city, accessible with a day pass or yearly membership for temporary use.
The bike sharing program offers a way to get people out of the car habit.
Beyond pleasure trips around the city, Bike Chattanooga hopes residents will start considering bikes as a good way to get to work or run errands.
“Brief periods of activity have substantial health benefits, so we have seen examples of doctors writing prescriptions to ride a bike,” says Philip Pugliese, bicycle coordinator for Outdoor Chattanooga.
“We’ve talked to people who have not been on a bicycle for more than 20 years, and now they’re riding every day.”
