Go Play Outside

As the second most physically inactive state in the U.S., Tennessee has some work to do.

Fortunately, there are groups willing to take action:

In Chattanooga, the Trust for Public Land is creating Fitness Zones, with free outdoor fitness equipment in local parks.

Bike Chattanooga has created an economical public bike transit system with 300 bikes and 33 docking stations throughout the city.

In Hamilton County, Tennessee, RiverPark stretches 10 miles along the Tennessee River from the Chickamauga Dam to downtown Chattanooga. Walkers, runners and bikers can work up a sweat while enjoying wildlife and public art that’s been installed alongside the lighted trail. BlueCross is supporting an extension of the trail, currently under construction.

In Memphis, people are getting RiverFit at Tom Lee Park with a sand volleyball court, soccer field and six workout stations. The installation was originally intended as a “pop-up” park but was so successful it’s now a permanent fixture.

Across the state, KaBOOM! has built 40 playgrounds for kids, especially those who live in areas of poverty.
