BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Statement on Excellus Cyber Attack

On Sept. 9, Excellus reported that a database containing as many as 10 million records of current and former customers, as well as their own employees, was illegally accessed. The information included names, Social Security numbers, birthdays, addresses, email and employment information, including income and possibly some medical data.

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and Excellus are separate companies with separate operations and information systems. The information that was accessed did not come directly from our systems, but from Excellus’ systems. However, Tennessee plan members receiving health care in the Excellus service area in New York could be at risk.

Working closely with Excellus, we estimate that up to 8,500 of our members’ information may have been impacted. Any current and former members whose information was accessed will be notified by letter and offered credit monitoring and identity repair services.
