BlueCross Healthy Place at Huntland City Park will Bring Neighbors Together for Connection, Recreation

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation investment will revitalize park in town center, provide community with new amenities

HUNTLAND, Tenn. — The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation has unveiled its first BlueCross Healthy Place project of 2019, the revitalization of a public park in the town of Huntland.

The site was chosen in response to a community-led proposal, and the project will provide residents with additional spaces for connection and recreation.

Community members initially requested funding for a play space, but the final project will include multiple new features. In addition to a fully accessible playground, the park will house a new basketball court with bleachers, outdoor fitness equipment, an upgraded pavilion for community gatherings and a new walking track.

During an official unveiling on Friday, April 12, representatives from BlueCross presented renderings of the playground and additional park components to enthusiastic attendees, including area residents.

“We are grateful to BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, and we hope the BlueCross Healthy Place at Huntland City Park will be a gathering place not only for town residents, but also for our neighbors in surrounding areas,” said Huntland Mayor Dolton Steele.

“We’re excited about this partnership with the town of Huntland,” said Scott Wilson, BlueCross director of community relations and health foundation. “The project will improve the quality of life for this community for years to come, and we look forward to working with residents to make today’s vision a reality.” He added, “Our first BlueCross Healthy Place is underway in Memphis, and we are proud our second park shows we are here for small towns in Tennessee as well.”

BlueCross Healthy Place projects are collaborations with the communities they serve. Local residents will play a critical role in the development of each new space, providing feedback and insight on the design.

The application period for BlueCross Healthy Place grants is currently closed, but the foundation will accept proposals for 2020 funding during the month of August 2019.
