BlueCross Plans Earn 4-Star Quality Rating for 2016

Commercial, BlueCare East divisions receive highest designation among Tennessee insurance plans

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Two BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee plans each earned an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars for 2016 from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), an accrediting body for health insurance plans.

The star ratings, debuted by NCQA in 2015, are designed to help consumers understand how well a health insurance plan supports its members in getting recommended care. With 4 of 5 stars in NCQA’s Private Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2016-2017, the commercial BlueCross plan is the top-rated private PPO plan in Tennessee. The East division of BlueCross’ Medicaid subsidiary, known as BlueCare Tennessee, was also rated 4 out of 5 stars – the top rating received by any Tennessee Medicaid plan in NCQA’s Medicaid Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2016-2017.

“Our 4-star rating is an achievement that our competitors in Tennessee can’t claim,” said Dr. Andrea Willis, chief medical officer for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. “This rating shows consumers in a very tangible way that we are dedicated to quality and to helping our members get care that improves health outcomes.”

The BlueCross divisions raised their rating through a number of enterprise initiatives that helped improve quality and health outcomes. This included targeted community outreach, incentivizing providers to help members get preventive care, mailings to let members know which health screenings they need, and reporting tools that help providers track quality scores.

“I am extremely proud of the efforts of our entire team,” added BlueCare Tennessee President & CEO Amber Cambron. “This achievement supports our goal of being the top managed care organization in the state.”
