Statement on the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Legal Settlement with Blue System Subscribers

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A settlement agreement among BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and all other Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies and plaintiffs representing Blue system subscribers was filed with the court to resolve a legal dispute challenging elements of Blue system licensing agreements.

We reject claims plaintiffs made in the lawsuit. However, to reach a settlement, we’ve agreed to make some operational changes and provide payment to certain Blue system subscribers identified as members of the class involved in this case.

Settling now is the right action at the right time because it allows us to remain focused on the goal we’ve had for 75 years: improving access to quality health care for Tennesseans and improving the health of our local communities.

Regardless of today’s settlement, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee remains a strong organization, and our exceptional services and capabilities will not change. We will continue to lead the industry with health care solutions designed to improve the health of our members.
