Affected Members Will Receive Free Credit Monitoring
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A recent technical issue at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee resulted in the mailing of old letters to addresses that may be outdated. This incident affected approximately 2,688 current and former members. These letters did not include sensitive information such as social security numbers or bank account information.
During a system update starting on May 28, 2023, the company’s letter-mailing system mistakenly reprinted and remailed some letters already sent to members between 2019 and 2021. The reprinted letters were directed to the correct members, but some may have been sent to outdated mailing addresses that members previously provided to the company.
BlueCross discovered the incident on June 5 and has begun to notify members whose letters were sent to outdated addresses. The letters could have contained their names, member ID numbers, group numbers, provider name, claim numbers, dates of service, and plan name. The letters may have contained eligibility information including type of coverage, premium and copay amounts, enrollment dates and application ID number.
The company is offering credit monitoring services to the potentially affected members. To date, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is unaware of any misuse of the mistakenly distributed information.
