When Alex Fletcher starts his day as a Medicare Advantage social worker at BlueCross, he never knows exactly what challenges he’ll take on. One call may involve helping a member navigate the transition home from a hospital stay. Another may mean connecting someone with food assistance, transportation or even support they never realized was available.
What Alex does know is his goal: to make a positive difference in the lives of members.
Alex’s role often comes into play during moments of uncertainty for a Medicare member, whether that’s returning home from the hospital, experiencing financial strain or adjusting to new limitations. He helps bridge gaps, answer questions and make sure members don’t have to face those uncertain moments alone.
“A lot of times, people just need someone to help connect the dots,” Alex says. “They don’t always know what resources exist, or how to access them.”
An advocate for the vulnerable
Alex works primarily with members during and after hospital stays, helping ensure they’re discharged safely and supported once they return home. He’s often coordinating with facilities, answering questions about in-home care options or helping members understand programs that can ease financial stress.
“There are situations where someone might be discharged to an unsafe environment if nobody asks the right questions,” Alex explains. “We’re there as an extra set of eyes, making sure someone has what they need to recover.”
In many cases, the support goes beyond logistics. Alex often checks in on how members are coping emotionally, something he says can make a meaningful difference.
“Sometimes just asking, ‘How are you doing?’ makes someone open up in surprising ways,” he says. “A lot of people have never been asked that before.”
Finding his path by helping others
Alex credits his family life with inspiring him to enter social work.
“My brother has special needs, and watching my father work patiently with him, believe in his ability to be more independent and help him achieve that had a big impact on me,” Alex explains. “I think it’s why, however many times I dabbled in other career options, I kept coming back to social service. Helping people is what felt meaningful.”
Before joining BlueCross, Alex worked in group homes and community settings, supporting people with developmental disabilities and severe mental illness, eventually earning his master’s degree while working full-time.
When he applied for a social worker role at BlueCross nearly five years ago, he wasn’t sure what to expect. His previous experience with insurance-based social work had been limited.
“I was surprised by how much impact you can have from this side,” he says. “And by how much support there is for employees doing the work.”
A culture of support
Transitioning to a remote-first environment and a larger team was a very different experience for Alex, But his teammates and supervisors prioritized helping him learn and grow in his role, offering him support and encouragement unlike anything he’d experienced in a previous workplace.
“They really want you to succeed here,” he says. “That just really struck me early on.”
Now, Alex pays that support forward for newer co-workers as well as members struggling to navigate the health care system.
“I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed,” he says. “If I can help someone else through that, I’m happy to do it.”

Small connections, lasting impact
One of the most rewarding parts of Alex’s work is seeing how simple interventions can dramatically change a member’s outlook. He recalls helping a member who was struggling to afford medications and basic necessities. By walking her through available programs, Alex helped reduce monthly medication costs by hundreds of dollars.
“That kind of relief is life-changing,” he says. “When someone calls back to tell you it worked, that just makes your day.”
Not every story has a clear ending, and Alex doesn’t always get to see how things turn out. Even so, he knows that he’s making a positive difference in members’ lives.
“You do what you can,” he says. “You make sure people know they’re supported, and that help is there when they need it.”
For Alex, a sense of purpose is what makes his role at BlueCross so fulfilling.
“BlueCross values really align with what matters to me,” he says. “I get to help people while getting the support I need to do it. That makes all the difference.”
